Happy Fourth of July

This week is a scorcher in the Twin Cities of MN.  The projected temperature for the fourth this year is 102 degrees F!  And if you’re living here, you are well aware that it’s not just the heat that is uncomfortable.  It’s the humidity as well.

As with any vacation or break in our regular routine, it can be tempting to throw out the good habits we’ve worked to implement.  But that doesn’t have to be the case.  So, following are some tips to beat the heat and stay healthy this Fourth of July week.

Four Tips for a Healthy Fourth

  1. Stay Hydrated – Whether or not you are out in the sun, you need to stay hydrated.  The rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day.  If you are in this heat, you will need more!  Our body’s perspire to cool off and we need to replenish these fluids.
  2. Get Active – A moving body is a healthy body.  Get outside and do something active.  Exercise is like investing your money.  You actually get more energy out when you put into it!  The health benefits are numerous – you will feel better through a release of endorphins (your body’s natural pain-killers), you will oxygenate your body’s tissues, you will breathe easier, you will pump blood more efficiently, and yes – you will have more energy if you exercise.
  3. Eat Healthy – Even if you are grilling or packing a picnic lunch, take the time to add in something healthy.  Have a salad or a few pieces of fruit.  Fruits and vegetables are loaded with water as well and by eating them it will help ward off dehydration on these hot days.
  4. Stay Cool – Obviously, we can’t tolerate extreme heat for too long.  If you are out and about, make sure to get periods of time indoors or in the shade.

Most of all, enjoy some down time.  Recharge your batteries and celebrate our Independence Day!
